‘I’m Not Ashamed’: Flaqo on Taking Back the Car He Gifted His Ex

Kenyan comedian Flaqo has faced criticism following the release of a satirical skit portraying online forex traders in a negative light, and later drew further attention for repossessing a car from his ex-girlfriend after their breakup.

Erastus Otieno, known professionally as Flaqo, has built a strong presence in Kenya’s digital comedy scene through his multi-character skits, with 'Mama Otis', a strict mother figure, remaining one of his most recognisable roles. His comedy often highlights familiar aspects of Kenyan life, combining sharp humour with cultural insight.

His recent skit, which mocked the perceived extravagance and dubious claims of success among some online forex traders, prompted strong reactions on social media. While some traders took offence, interpreting the sketch as a targeted attack on their profession, Flaqo says the content was based on a viral meme and intended solely for entertainment.

He further clarifies that it was not aimed at any individual or the wider forex industry. “The people genuinely doing forex weren’t offended,” he said, suggesting the backlash may have revealed the accuracy of the portrayal. Fellow comedian Eddie Butita has also defended the skit, noting it did not reference anyone directly and urging audiences to view it as a piece of satire.

Separately, Flaqo’s personal life has come under public scrutiny following his breakup with content creator Keranta. The situation attracted attention when he took back a car he had previously gifted her. Valued at Sh650,000, the car was reportedly reallocated to his current partner. Flaqo explains that the vehicle remained under his name and described the decision as practical rather than emotional.

“The car belongs to the office of my girlfriend,” he said, adding that he chose not to reclaim other items to avoid appearing petty and to ensure his former partner was not left without support.

He describes the breakup as emotionally challenging but said both parties tried to handle it with maturity. Despite online speculation and unfounded claims, including a rumour about his circumcision status, Flaqo has declined to respond publicly, stating his focus remains on his creative work and personal development.

Following the separation, he reportedly turned his attention to content creation and physical fitness.
