Who Was Grace Mburu? Remembering the Actress Behind Mama Bob

Grace Mburu, the Kenyan actress best known for her role as Mama Bob in the popular television series Machachari, has died.

Her death was confirmed on Tuesday by her sister and fellow actress Wanjiku Mburu. Mburu gained national recognition through Machachari, a Citizen TV drama that aired from 2010 to 2019.

Set in Nairobi’s informal settlements, the series explored the lives of children and families facing urban challenges, blending humour with social commentary. As Mama Bob, Mburu portrayed a strong and determined mother raising her son in a low-income neighbourhood.

Her on-screen son, Bob, was a close friend to Baha and Govi, characters played by Tyler Mbaya and Malik Lemmy, who became widely known during the show’s successful run. Her performance was praised for its realism and emotional honesty, capturing the experiences of many Kenyan women.

Viewers and critics alike recognised her ability to portray resilience and warmth, qualities that helped make Machachari one of the most memorable local productions of its time. Colleagues described Mburu as a dedicated and principled artist who supported younger actors and valued the craft of storytelling.

Though she preferred to keep her personal life private, she was known within the industry for her professionalism and generosity. Tributes from fans and fellow actors have flooded social media following news of her passing.

Malik Lemmy, who played Govi, wrote, “Oh God. This really shocked me. I am so sorry. May Gracie, Mama Bob, rest in eternal peace.”

Many others shared similar messages, remembering her both for her work and her kindness. In a TikTok video, Wanjiku Mburu revealed that her sister spent her final moments in Mooi River, South Africa.

“South Africa, to be specific Mooi River, and this is where my sister had her last moment. And I’m just here to lay these flowers for her. In loving memory, Grace Wangui Mburu,” she said.

The family has not disclosed the cause of death.
