Kenyan Actor and Director Bilal Wanjau Dies at 46 After Prolonged Illness

Kenyan actor and director Bilal Wanjau has died at the age of 46 after a prolonged illness, confirmed by close associates on Thursday, 4 December.

Wanjau, widely known for his roles in the popular TV drama Tahidi High and other productions such as Lies That Bind, Pepeta, and Jela 5 Star, was a significant figure in the Kenyan entertainment industry. His performances, marked by humour and charisma, made him a beloved household name, while his work on Jela 5 Star earned him a Kalasha Award for Best Performance in a Comedy in 2017.

Colleagues, including actress Sandra Dacha, have paid tribute to Wanjau, describing his death as a deep loss to both the industry and the community. He was praised for his dedication to the craft and his ability to connect with audiences.

Although the exact cause of death has not been disclosed, sources suggest that Wanjau had been struggling with complications related to diabetes. In addition to his television work, Wanjau's career spanned film and stage, where his performances were widely recognised.

He also featured in international projects, such as the adult drama 4Play, further expanding his reach and influence. Wanjau was a vocal advocate for the growth of the Kenyan film industry, frequently urging both audiences and policymakers to support local talent and productions.

Wanjau will be buried in his rural home in Machakos on Friday, 5 December, in a ceremony expected to be attended by members of the arts community and fans who wish to honour his legacy.
