The United States government has given Sh3 billion to Kenya’s electoral body IEBC to help it enhance capacity ahead of the August 8 election.
Speaking to the media on Thursday, the US Ambassador to Kenya, Robert Godec said that the US was committed to building the capacity of the commission to enable it be able to conduct free, fair and credible elections in August.
Godec said that the cash will be spent on peace building and voters’ education programs by the electoral body as it prepares to conduct the August 8 elections.
He further said that the support was part of the US government’s pledge to enhance democracy and peace and enable Kenya realize her development agenda.
Godec said that he will offer technical support as far as conducting credible elections is concerned, adding that he will remain a neutral player during the exercise. “The US does not have a candidate nor support any political party,” Godec said.
The ambassador was speaking during a public debate at Maseno University in Kisumu on Wednesday.
He further said that the United Sates was committed to maintaining the good ties it has had with Kenya, adding that the two countries have a deep relationship that cuts across institutions, businesses and the citizens.
Godec condemned corruption saying that it undermines the future of the country in democracy, security and prosperity calling for action against the vice. “All this needs to change and words should be turned into actions with concrete steps taken,” he said.
This funding comes days after the US government suspended Sh2.1 billion assistance at the Health ministry citing misuse of the fund.
