President Uhuru Kenyatta has been given a three-day ultimatum to axe the Cabinet Secretary in charge of agriculture amid skyrocketing prices of essential commodities in the country.
National Assembly Agriculture committee told President Kenyatta that he has until Tuesday to sack Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett for failing to avert the current crisis that has seen the prices of commodities such as maize flour, sugar, and milk skyrocket.
Led by the Vice Chairman of the Agriculture Committee in the National Assembly, Kareke Mbiuki, the legislators want Bett sacked or step down voluntarily failure to which the MPs will lead mass action to sanction his sacking.
The lawmakers accuse Bett of colluding with some individuals to create shortage of essential commodities in order to hike prices. They further accused some top government officials of creating a deficiency in essential commodities in a move to hike the prices to fatten their pockets.
“The CS misled the house and the entire nation that we had sufficient food stocks. If indeed there were enough reserves, the CS should account for the two million bags, if not, he should also take responsibility for lying," he stated.
The calling was backed by Ugunja lawmaker Opiyo Wandayi, Fred Outa (Nyando), Florence Mutua (Busia MP) and Mary Wambui Othaya, who were present at the press conference.
Sacking or not sacking the Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture will not solve the problem of inflation in Kenya. The problem is not the Cabinet Secretary but it is the Kenyan legislatures who have continued to loot public funds with impunity, and the high salaries and allowances they have continued to award themselves. Stop corruption and reduce the high salaries and the high allowances for the Kenya legislatures, and the inflation will go.
