Police were on Sunday forced to lob teargas canisters after over 50 youths believed to be supporters of opposition coalition NASA blocked Deputy President William Ruto’s convoy at Misikhu market along the Webuye–Morale road.
The rowdy group lit bonfires and sang anti-Jubilee slogans, preventing DP Ruto from using the route. The rowdy youths shouted that Deputy President and the Jubilee government had forgotten the region while sharing development in the country.
Several youths who engaged the police in running battles were arrested during the incident that forced the Deputy President to use an alternative route.
"We do not want Ruto and his Jubilee brigade here as we are fully behind NASA due to the high cost of living that has made prices of flour and sugar to skyrocket," said a youth identified as Weke told The Star.
Bingham East police boss Zaccheus Ngeno said that police will act on any individual who try to cause violence warning youths in the area to desist from allowing themselves be used to cause violence ahead of the August 8 general elections.
The Deputy President is in Bungoma where he is expected to attend a political rally at Nubile at Amutala stadium.
