Othaya MP Mary Wambui has announced that she is retiring from active politics. This comes after she lost the Jubilee nomination to retain her seat last month.
Addressing journalists at the Othaya CDF office on Tuesday, the one-term MP said rather than run as an independent in the August 8th general elections as many candidates who lost in the nominations are, she will focus her energy and influence in campaigning for President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election.
“I will focus my energy and influence on the President’s re-election campaign. I urge voters to turn up in large numbers on August 8 and vote for Uhuru and Deputy President William Ruto as they have performed well,” Wambui said.
Wambui lost in the Jubilee primary election to Gichuki Mugambi last month after garnering 12,524 votes against Mugambi’s 20,228.
Wambui has served as Othaya MP since 2013. The constituency was represented by retired President Mwai Kibaki for eight terms, having served from 1974-2013.
