A newly released opinion poll conducted by Radio Africa Group has indicated that National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate Raila Odinga has significantly cut the gap between him and President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The survey indicate that if elections were to be held today, the Orange democratic party leader would garner 40 percent of the votes cast compared to 24 percent he scored in another poll in March this year.
President Uhuru Kenyatta’s popularity has dropped to 49 percent in the recent poll, up from 51 percent in March.
That means that the gap between the two main presidential candidates have reduced to just 9 percent, indicating that NASA presidential candidate has gained popularity compared to Jubilee’s.
This is the first opinion poll since the opposition outfit NASA named Raila Odinga as its presidential candidate ending the month’s speculations on the outfit’s flag bearer.
The poll was conducted by Computer Aided Telephone Interview (CATI) between May 2 and 14 where 3,430 respondents over 18 years in 28 counties were interviewed.
The poll carries a 1.7 percent margin of error with a 95 percent confidence level.
Overall, Jubilee Party leads with 51 percent support while NASA comes second with 42 percent and 7 percent undecided.
Nyandarua (97 percent) and Muranga (94 percent) are the two counties where Uhuru scored highest and Raila had virtually zero support in the two counties.
The former Prime Minister's strongest counties were Siaya (90 percent) and Homa Bay (91 percent) while in contested areas, Kisii (73-19 percent) appeared strongly for Raila. He also led Uhuru in Garissa (50-35 percent) and Kilifi (47-36 percent).
In Nairobi County, Uhuru has a significant huge support of 49 percent compared to Raila’s 37 percent.
