First Lady Margaret Kenyatta is expected to take part in Kigali International Peace Marathon on Sunday along with her Rwandese counterpart Jeanette Kagame.
The 13th edition of the race is expected to attract an estimated 6,000 athletes, diplomats and peace enthusiasts from various countries in the world.
The race incorporates the 42 km full marathon and the 21km races, although the two First Ladies are will take part in a symbolic and non-competition 7km special “run for peace” after flagging off the other two events.
This will be the second time that the two First Ladies from Kenya and Rwanda will run together after the Beyond Zero Half marathon in Nairobi on March 6 last year in which Margaret was spearheading a campaign to mobilize resources aimed at reducing maternal deaths in the country.
The three concurrent events will start and end at the Amahoro National Stadium in Kigali, after which Kenyatta and Jeanette will preside over the awarding of the winners.
The victor of the 41 km marathon will walk away with 2 million Rwandese Franc (approximately KSh240,000), while the winner of the 21km race will take home 1 million Rwandese Franc (about Sh120,000).
Kenyans have dominated the past editions of the Kigali peace marathons, scooping top awards in both 42km and 21km races.
