Wiper Democratic Party nominee for Machakos County governor Wavinya Ndeti has been dealt a big blow after the poll management body, Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) dispute resolution tribunal barred her from contesting for the seat.
The electoral body tribunal ruled that it discovered that her nomination by the Kalonzo Musyoka-led party was irregular. "As at the time of the nomination of Ndeti, she was both a member of Chama Cha Uzalendo (CCU) and Wiper party which is against the law," said the panel.
The former Kathiani Member of parliament has been battling to retain her nomination certificate after a voter filed a petition challenging her eligibility.
Some individuals from the Wiper party were to block her nomination on grounds that she was still a member of Chama Cha Uzalendo (CCU) which she ditched for Wiper.
The petitioner argued that Ndeti was a member of two parties and therefore not eligible to contest for the seat in the August 8 polls, as it contravened the law of the land.
Ndeti trounced her closest rival Bernard Kiala with over 200,000 votes, an outcome which Kiala contested. Kiala has since abandoned Wiper and is contesting for the Machakos top seat as an independent candidate.
Ndeti was considered the best candidate to beat incumbent Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua of Maendeleo Chap Chap.
