The Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) Coordination Board has asked the Central Bank of Kenya to freeze accounts of a foundation connected to National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate Raila Odinga’s daughter, Rosemary Odinga.
The body alleges that the Odinga’s youngest daughter’s foundation illegally received over Sh530 million for political campaign funding, which contravenes what the foundation was registered for.
In a letter to CBK Governor, Dr. Patrick Ngugi Njoroge, the NGO watchdog board revealed that it has sufficient information that Key Empowerment Foundation Kenya, the former Prime Minister’s daughter-linked foundation got Sh530 million from US-based George Soros Foundation.
The NGOs board said that Rosemary’s foundation contravened the NGOs Co-ordination Act 1990, the NGOs Co-ordination Regulations 1992 and Terms and Conditions attached to the certificate of registration and its own constitution by receiving the donor cash from ‘aid associated with subterfuge political activities’.
The Board further argued that the foundation opened and was operating several illicit unauthorized bank accounts contrary to Section 12 (4) of the NGOs Co-ordination Act No. 19 of 1990 and further sourcing funding aimed at achieving political agenda.
The Board said that it suspects the funding was used towards bankrolling National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate Raila Odinga’s campaigns as he eyes the country’s top seat in next week’s elections.
The board wants Rosemary and the Key Empowerment Foundation Kenya be investigated.
