Canada has expressed its concern over the Kenyan government’s recent crackdown on opposition leaders and recent shutdown of television stations.
Global Affairs Canada, in a statement, said it is deeply concerned by some of the recent government as it cracks down on opposition leaders who were involved in the controversial January 30th swearing-in of NASA leader Raila Odinga as the people’s president. Canada urged the Kenyan government to uphold the constitution, respect court orders, and allow freedom of expression.
“As a friend to Kenya, Canada is deeply concerned by some of the Government of Kenya’s recent actions, including the unlawful detention of opposition members without due process or access to counsel, and the shutdown of, and restrictions on, certain media outlets,” read the statement posted on Global Affairs Canada on Wednesday.
“We urge the Government of Kenya to uphold its Constitution, to allow freedom of expression and to respect court orders, including those that order the release of those granted bail,” the statement continued.
The statement comes after Miguna Miguna was deported by Kenya to Canada after being held in custody for six days for his involvement in the swearing-in of Raila. The Canadian High Commission in Nairobi had earlier criticized Kenya over how it handled Miguna.

Canada, if taking of illegal oath, forming NRM & people assemblies is freedom of expression then arresting, disobeying court orders, shutting down tv station & unlawful detention is freedom of expression. Preaching water and drinking wine
Canada should desist from sending dissidents and criminals like this thug to sovereign Kenya, period.
Canada please keep your citizens to yourself and stop exporting them to shithole country aka third world.
Canada, the new breeding ground for terorists. Trump is watching. The statement reads like it was written by Miguna himself.
Miguna will be back in Kenya as that is his birthright okuyu ni kupayuka ovyo tu you think your kamwana prezzo achieved anything.Side shows ati development .Form your KCA halafu mta deport kutoka Central mumejazana Kama your staple githeri already.
Canada, why don't you allow some individuals swear themselves in as the PM and bear arms to kill others , in the name of freedom of speech. Nonsense!
Canada need to respect it's own constitution first before lecturing Kenya on what to do. Why is it not charging Miguna with terrorism charges? Miguna is a terrorist belonging to NRM, a banned terrorist organization in Kenya. He should be in jail or police custody now if Canada adheres to it's own constitution.
What the Secretary of Interior Dr. Mating did to Miguna is unpardonable. It shows him clearly as a man Devoid of Conscience or Humanity.
Dr. Mating, please learn from what the State Of Israel has done to all the Jews born in diaspora. They are automatic Israeli citizens regardless of their place of birth and hold dual citizenship.
Shame on you Dr. Mating!
Kenya has its own constitution... thus, Kenya is not Israel, or any other country for that matter.
@imara you are worth nothting. Let any of those 'Jews' declare support for Hamass or Hisbollah and Israel will hunt and shoot them like wild animals.
All u guys who resides in western mzungu country have remained there coz rule of law is followed there but when it comes to Kenya hamtaki the same Kenyan law ifuatwe.Fikirieni sana.Miguna broke the law n yes he was born in Kenya but since 2010 constitution he never reapplied for his Kenyan citizenship back,it’s that simple so nyinyi marefungeees mmekatalia kwa wazungu mkiwafanya miungu yenye should preach about the rule of law beta.Bure kabisa.N Uhuru has nothing to do with miguna deportation hio ni kazi ya immigrantion Who r in charge. So blame mr kihalagwa who did the right thing.
I abhore violence, and I do not support discrimination of all forms.I would like Kenya to go back to that state of relative peace and tranquility. And Iam sure sound minded Kenyans would agree with me on this.
I acknowledge that Uhuru is the president of Kenya, and rightfully elected by the majority-twice.I wish him continued success, and would love for all Kenyans to support him in all his projects. However, if his regime is not following the constitution, then we have a problem. This is unless somewhere in the law it states that, the constitution could be suspended at times,or disregarded.
Now if Canada claims that Jubilee is not adhering to the constitution it promulgated, and passed in to law;a mere observation. Why should we overreact?
If Canada's allegations are not true, then we have nothing to worry about . Do we?
@Njai: You are worth something although we might differ on some salient issues. I will listen to your opinions carefully and attentively without calling you names Ndugu yangu Njai.
Solution: The crooked IEBC cleared thugs, drug dealers, pedophiles, rapists, thieves, drug users, incompetent people to run for an elective public office. Njai, unless we reform the IEBC, Kenya, as a legal and rule abiding nation is over. I love my country Kenya. My mother shed her blood for the independence of Kenya. This is not what I expected Kenya to be! Shame on the Jubilee Alliance and NASA crooked political parties.
Well said. What are you doing specifically to make things better? Have offered to run for office?
Rao help miguna...Hahaha ....u cant coz u powerless as a kerosene lamp
Canada and other Western countries need to shut up and let Kenya exercise democracy the African way. Kenya cannot allow 1 community to terrorize the other 41 communities just because the Luo community listens to a mad man. Canada in its sane mind cannot allow civil disobedience. Keep your Miguna Miguna and hush.
