Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has directed all bars in Kiambu county be shutdown with immediate effect in latest crackdown on illicit liquor.
The CS further ordered all bar owners in the county to apply for new licenses under the new Kiambu Alcoholic Bill stipulations.
“Kiambu has a mysterious history with illicit brews. It’s the only county with more bars than all the primary and secondary schools put together,” he said during the launch of a national crackdown on illicit brews in Gatundu North.
Kiambu has 1,226 public primary and secondary schools, which is less than the number of registered bars- 3062. Matiang’i said his ministry will launch joint efforts with all counties in the fight against illegal brews.
“We have to sort out this problem once and for all. We cannot be burying over 10 people from one village every week,” the CS said.
He criticised the judiciary for helping bar owners run their businesses using court orders.
“Let us work together. We are one country. I urge the judiciary to be part of the solution not part of the problem. The challenges we are facing are our administrators battling court orders every day,” he said.
“We will act on every chief hindering the fight against illicit brews. We are doing our best to support chiefs to deliver services to the people,” he said.

a school can serve a community upto a radius of like 5km or less but I do not image someone travelling that far for a drink it is a mater of like 100m or .5km or a kilimometer lakini Kiambu has had MP, Senator,Women representative chief wanafanya nini Mpaka Matiang ameingililia but not only in Kiambu Drink responsibly
Moses Kuria do something for your people in Gatundu. U leave your house on fire helping others to put off their fire. U r a disgrace.
Uhuru, please reassign Matiangi back to education. Personally, I don't consume alcohol, or any mind altering drugs including coffee.
If you (matiang'i have plan to ban the use of alcohol in Kiambu bars, you should as well ban it entirely in the whole republic. No double standards!
Aiii Imara, umekaa ngumu? Hata kahawa?
People will not die from not drinking alcohol but they will die from drinking it. Great move Matiangi! The thirsty will see you as the enemy for now but at the end of it, many homes will be saved, many families will begin to recover and at least some of the wives will rediscover their love. Extend this to Muranga and then Nyeri.
Why can't he order a closure of muuaji Raila's methanol production factory and cancellation of muuaji Joho's methanol import licence first? The two sell the killer poison directly to illegal brewers instead of selling it to petroleum, paints and other factories which use it.Ata Matiang'i acts with stupidity like an educated fool?He knows very well what happened whe US banned alcolic brews in 1920s.
I dont see how issuing new licenses would help.People "enjoy" illicit alcohol because its cheap and carries a punch.
Make licit alcohol affordable.Strict rules will just drive the beverage underground.
Iam not sure if Kiambu out drink the rest of the counties.Could be wrong, but I think their illicit brew tops the list of illicit brews-by far.
And not do not try to deny the men their conjugal rights as a remedy, as some had suggested in the past.Probably a truck load of genuine counselors poured in the county might help.
Boss ... alcohol is been used as a tool to kill the brain power in kiambu county ... my neighbour lectures at Kenyatta University .. her saturday class has 22 students ... the only 2 kikuyus in the class show up in class with hangovers ... and only discuss Uhurus pet project SGR .. the rest of the students are luos, luyhas, kambas etc ... sharp, sober and serious students on a mission to acquire knowledge ... these are the leaders and policy makers of tomorrow ... its a sad situation that has gotten out of hand ... our drunk kikuyus brothers are left running barber shops, mpesas, car washes, bars, butcheries etc .. just pathetic
I forgot to mention .. one luo student actually flies from kisumu every saturday and makes it class by 8am ... 2 drunk kikuyu students in a masters class of 22 ... in kikuyu land
@Mugikuyu:
You have to protect your N.I.P. Natural Information Processor - the brain - by keeping it clean and sharp 24/7.

Good. Tell them to go home do something even if it is to make babies. Kuwakawaka Kila saa,Kila siku ni hai tupu, useless. No wonder development can't go on. Wakitaka kuwaka waende Sankari na Kempinski.
