A Kenyan human rights activist has gone on a hunger strike in solidarity with deported lawyer Miguna Miguna.
Boniface Akumu, a Kisumu-based activist has kept vigil at Kondele round about for the last four days in a bid to mount pressure on the State to allow the besieged self-proclaimed National Resistance Movement (NRM) general back to the country.
Akumu has pitched tent at the round about with a big placard reading "we want Miguna back, " we stand with Miguna 100% and "rule of law not negotiable."
“I do not care even if I die of hunger. I have been very unhappy with the way the state has been abusing the rule of law,” said Akumu.
“We cannot continue living like this where the constitution is not respected at all and our rights as Kenyans are also not respected,” he told the Standard.
He says the last time he took a meal was on Thursday and he is growing weak now, but that won't stop him from fighting injustices.
“I am growing weaker by the day but I do not care because I believe this is a worthy cause and I have been getting a lot of encouragement from well-wishers,” he says.
“With this peaceful silent protest, I believe the message will reach the government and also our people on the need to respect the constitution,” says Akumu.
This is even as the exiled lawyer left Dubai for Canada on Sunday night and landed in Toronto on Monday, in what he said was to seek treatment after being "poisoned" by Jubilee regime.
"Today, I have arrived in Ontario, Canada in order to undergo specialized toxicology tests and medical treatment following my illegal and violent abduction, torture and chemical poisoning by the tyrannical Jubilee regime," Miguna said in a statement dispatched from Toronto, Canada on Monday.
