It has now emerged that the recent detention of self-declared National Resistance Movement (NRM) general Miguna Miguna at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) is not an isolated case.
Another man, identified as Mohammed Hussein Bloushu, has spent the last four months at the JKIA after he became a victim of stringent immigration rules.
Nairobi News reports that the 44-year claims he is a nationa of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Prior to his detention at the airport, Hussein was rejected in three other countries including the UAE.
He says that his troubles started in 2015 when UAE authorities arrested him for being in possession of marijuana and was handed a 20-month jail term.
After serving his sentence, he was put on a Comoros-bound flight, since he had been issued with the country's passport. “I was then put on a plane to the Comoros since I had been issued the country’s passport by my government in 2013,” he said.
However, after landing in Archipelago, Comoros, he was denied entry after immigration officials said his passport details couldn't reflect on their database.
He was returned to Nairobi on a KQ flight, but was flown to Dubai the next day, where he was also rejected and returned to Nairobi.
“When I landed at Dubai, they disowned me and said I should be in Comoros because I have the country’s passport,” said Mohammed.
He then decided to travel to the Philippines since holders of a Comoros passport are allowed entry to the Asian country without a Visa.
“I was transiting through Bangkok but I was held at the airport because I had two months and twenty days remaining on my transit Visa. They said my Visa should be at least three months,” he stated.
He was placed on a Comoros-bound flight, but upon arrival, he was flown back to Kenya for the second time.
Since then, JKIA has been his home and he is provided with breakfast, lunch and supper on a daily basis.
He says he has maintained constant communication with his family in UAE through his mobile phone.
