President Kenyatta has slammed those opposed to his handshake with opposition leader Raila Odinga, accusing them of being against national unity.
Speaking during the funeral service of the late Kenneth Matiba held at Ihura Stadium in Murang’a County on Thursday, the President stated that he was aware of individuals in both Jubilee and the Opposition, who are uncomfortable with the unity pact.
“I know there are many who were not pleased with what we did, we know, we’re hearing noise from here and there… both from my side and his (Raila’s) side… and that is the truth, because they (those opposed to the handshake) thrive on commotion,” said Kenyatta.
He added:“But we decided that we do not want those who thrive on commotion, we want those who will thrive in peace and prosperity, that is the direction we wish and desire for our people.”
President Kenyatta was categorical that the handshake with Odinga was not about succession politics, but rather uniting the country, sentiments that were echoed by the opposition leader.
“In order to entrench democracy, we must entrench unity. So that even when we differ, we differ on the basis of ideas; not ethnicity, not religion,” he said.
"I wonder why people raise issues about 2022 when I meet with Raila. As Raila has said there will be elections in 2022, 2027 and up to 3000."
President Kenyatta vowed to continue working with Raila and urged other leaders to rally behind the unity initiative.
"I will continue walking with Raila. Those willing to go with us should join us and seek any clarification they want from us and not plot behind our backs."
"Let us leave these politics aside and focus on what matters most for Kenyans. With that we will have helped them realise their dream. Leadership does not come easy and is not an agreement on paper but having the vision towards a better Kenya," He said.
The President further noted that only unity can help the country achieve the much needed economic development. "I, therefore, ask our politicians to stop their petty backstabbing and blackmail. When Kenya burns, even your place will burn. Fire does not miss anyone."
"Let us emulate our fathers and dedicate ourselves to sorting out all the issues we have purposed to. I appreciate my brother Raila for agreeing to work together with me because Kenya is bigger than an individual," he said.

Those who oppose the handshake are just warmongers. The two leaders have buried the hatched and decided to work together for the betterment of all Kenyans. Iask what is wrong with that?Is not the opposition now in abetter position to articulate its demands with the ruling party? As we all know,it is very hard to solve anything when two people are fighting. The fight has to stop,or one has conquer the other.
These two leaders have shown the noble way to deal with an opposing side.Make peace first. We need another handshake to affirm the first one.
Raila can shake hands with whomever he wants.
But let it be clear, Uhuru Kenyatta is NOT our President.
He is Despot who needs to stay in his Electoral fraud cannot produce a legitimate leader lane.
90% of Kenyans don't recognize him as their leader. That's the truth.
He is also a Cambridge Analytica monkey.
Mr. President, I hope you know what you're doing because yesterday your buddy Raila said that he won August 8th election. Am afraid you're underestimating this guy and he may eventually leave you ridiculed and embarrassed. And if he is promising you a post, e.g, a Prime Minister, after 2022, just know that once he is President, he will amend the constitution and abolish such a PM post and leave you out to dry. We just don't want to be embarrassed a long with you, when he gets you.
As Kenyans, we appreciate the "Handshake" if it means development and reduction of money being wasted on politics and political positions. However if the Handshake changes our Constitution to satisfy greed of a few, that will be the downfall of Kenya as we know it under your watch. We need to keep that document sacred and only change it when it is absolutely necessary and when it has a positive effect on all or majority of Kenyans. If it's changed for inclusivity and not merit, Kenya and it's institutions is Dead. Let no one engage in useless politics while Kenya has not recovered from the cost of an extra shameful election. We are already the laughing stock of the world. We do not need any more shame from our politicians.
Raila needs Exorcism after that handshake.
Uhuru Kenyatta hands are full of blood of the Kenyans he has killed.
Not my President.
