Details have emerged that a missing suspect in businesswoman Monica Kimani's murder fled to Mombasa to seek supernatural protection from a witchdoctor.
Police say the man accompanied Citizen TV news anchor Jacque Maribe's fiancée Joseph 'Jowie' Irungu on the night Ms Kimani was brutally killed at her apartment in Nairobi's Kilimani estate.
“Preliminary investigations have established that Irungu was seen in the company of another person near the crime scene. The identity of the person seen with Irungu has yet to be established but the investigating team is following leads,” police said in an affidavit.
The missing suspect is also believed to be in possession of crucial evidence taken from the victim's apartment including cash, the killer weapon, house and car keys as well as clothes.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) traveled to Mombasa in search of the mystery man after learning that he was in the coastal city to seek "cleansing ".
On Monday, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji ordered Maribe and her fiancée Irungu be charged with the murder of the 29-year-old woman.
Monica was found dead in her Lamuria Gardens A8 apartment on September 20th, with her mouth taped, limbs tied and her neck slit. Her lifeless body was dumped in a bathtub.
She was killed hours after returning to Kenya from Juba, South Sudan where she was reportedly running a family business.
Maribe and Jowie are currently being held at Lang’ata Women’s Prison and Industrial Area Prison respectively and will arraigned in court on Monday.
