Kenya Airways is set to launch weekly direct flights to Israel in March 2019, Kenya Association of Travel Agents says.
Kenya and Israel have completed talks about the direct flights plan and it is now up to Kenya Airways to set the start date.
“There is a great deal of political and tourist importance in the African market. The entry of Kenya Airways into Israel will further improve ties with Kenya and Africa in general,” says Israel spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon.
The launch of nonstop flights between Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Tel Aviv is expected to boost trade ties between the two countries as well as tourism.
In June, a Kenyan delegation led by KQ Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sebastian Mikosz travelled to Tel Aviv where they held discussions with Israeli Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz.
Kenya Airways is also set to seek authority from the Sudanese government to allow its aircrafts fly over its airspace.
Israel discontinued nonstop flights to Kenya in 2002 after a terror attack on an Israeli-owned hotel in Kikambala, Kilifi County and a plane belonging to the country’s carrier.
Currently, Israeli national airline Arkia operates direct flights to Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar in Tanzania.
