The US Embassy in Nairobi has issued a security alert over the potential for increased crime and violent extremism in Kenya.
In a notice on Friday, the embassy urged American nationals and members of the public to take extreme precautions in public locations such as shopping malls, hotels, airports, clubs, restaurants, transportation hubs, schools, places of worship, and other areas frequented by tourists.
“Public events, such as demonstrations and celebratory gatherings, are also at a higher risk for violence,” the notice reads.
US citizens are urged to take the following actions; exercise vigilance at events, places of worship, and locations with large crowds, review your personal security plans, be aware of your surroundings, and monitor local media for updates.
This comes a day after France, Germany and the Netherlands warned of a looming terror attack in the country and urged their citizens to avoid public areas and crowded places.
On Friday, Kenyan authorities allayed fears of impending terror attacks in the country, saying they are yet to receive reports from any of the said foreign governments on the matter.
Police spokesman Bruno Shioso said security had been beefed up in Nairobi and other parts of the country and assured Kenyans of their safety.
