Gov’t to Install Advanced Security Systems at JKIA to 'Profile Passengers'

The government is set to install Advanced Passenger Information System (APIS) and e-Gates at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and other ports of entry in the country.

The APIs and e-Gates will help boost the country’s security as well as eliminate queues as passengers await their immigration stamps, according to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki.

“The Ministry is at an advanced stage of acquiring and installing an Advanced Passenger Information System (APIS) that will be integrated into the international immigration system to enable us to profile passengers travelling in and out of Kenya and even those transiting through the country before they land here,” Kindiki said in a statement on Saturday.

“APIS will be supplemented with the installation of e-Gates at JKIA and our ports of entry. Besides being a major boost in assisting our immigration and security endeavors, this APIS system and e-Gates will eliminate queues at our immigration counters.”

In addition, the government is working to improve electronic surveillance at the ports’ gates to be able to detect prohibited items.

We are attempting to digitize every aspect of life and too happy to blindly adopt anything "AI" ,"smart" or 'data-driven' without a second thought of unintended consequences.Mining people for data (which is being treated as something that is up for grabs by capitalist)is similar to the colonizers attitude that declared Kenyan as raw material. The unfair practices and over policing of the use of facial recognition technology will be inevitable.
