Former President Daniel Moi's daughter June Chebet Moi has died at the age of 60.
The Moi family confirmed her passing on Friday morning but did not disclose the cause of death. In a statement, the family requested privacy as they mourn their loss. News of her death has prompted an outpouring of condolences with President William Ruto expressing his sympathies and offering prayers and support to the Moi family. Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and MSME Development Simon Chelugui has also paid his respects, remembering June as a dedicated Kenyan.
June's death comes as a shock to the nation. Kenyans stand together in grief as they mourn the loss of this respected figure. June Chebet, though not biologically related, held a cherished position within the family of former Kenyan President Daniel Arap Moi. Raised alongside his eight biological children, Chebet was embraced as the youngest daughter. Notably, President Moi had five sons and three daughters, including a set of twins. Chebet's educational path began at Nairobi Primary and Kenya High School, culminating in university studies pursued in Canada.
Beyond her academic achievements, Chebet carved a successful career path in the world of business. Among the President's biological children, Gideon Moi stands out for his foray into Kenyan politics. Former rally driver Jonathan Toroitich tragically passed away in 2019. Retired army officer Philip Moi is another of the President's sons. President Moi's wife Lena was the daughter of a farmer and a Christian pioneer. Lena was initially a trained teacher but as President Moi's political career blossomed she transitioned into the role of a devoted homemaker.
Their marriage, however, dissolved in 1974, culminating in a discreet divorce finalized five years later. Following their separation, Lena sought a quiet life on her farm in Rongai where she remained until her passing in July 2004. While details of Chebet's personal history remain scarce, it is evident that she held a special place in President Moi's heart, mirroring the bond parents often share with a favourite child. Both Chebet and Gideon were reportedly cherished by the President and Chebet even assumed the role of representing the family on official occasions. Notably, Chebet led a life of modesty, further contributing to the limited information available about her.

A shock to the nation? Which Kenyans are united in grief? May she reap what she sowed wherever her souls ends. I don’t give a damn and am Kenyan.
Death is for us all. No doubt. Ati Moi, Gideon, June, Jonathan, Phillip, had business acumenship. Lord help us! Brethren, watch how you treat others because one day, one time, it going to bite you really good. Show some respect to others, help when your can, and on. Because a time will come when you will have to pay dearly, and if its not you, your children and grandchildren. The sins of crime of Moi still hangs in the clouds 50 years later. Time to pay up.
