Seasoned Kenyan statesman Raila Odinga has embarked on a diplomatic mission shrouded in mystery.
The move has piqued the curiosity of political pundits and observers alike. Accompanied by his trusted confidants, Hassan Joho and Junet Mohamed, Odinga's departure from Nairobi has left many speculating about the purpose and destination of his diplomatic mission. Before taking off, Odinga and his delegation engaged in a discussion with World Bank President Ajay Banga at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The focal point of their dialogue revolved around the prospects and projections for Africa's growth in line with Odinga's commitment to advancing the continent's development agenda.
While the specifics of Odinga's mission remain elusive, the Azimio affiliate party Kanu was the first to announce their departure via their X account, fueling speculation about the nature of this endeavour. Many question whether it is a high-level diplomatic negotiation or perhaps a quiet mediation effort. In a twist, Kanu leader Gideon Moi shared airspace with Odinga, Joho, and Junet aboard a Dubai-bound flight. Moi, en route to Rome for his son's wedding, engaged in a friendly exchange with the trio, extending his warm wishes to Odinga. Moi expressed his support for Odinga's ambitious bid to become the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission.
"Hon Gideon Moi departed the country yesterday for Rome where he bumped into Raila Odinga, Hassan Ali Joho and Junet Mohamed in a Dubai-bound flight. The four had a splendid time together, catching up on many issues affecting the country. Raila, Joho and Junet conveyed their greetings and blessings to Hon. Moi's son, Kigen ahead of his white wedding ceremony in Rome this weekend. Hon. Gideon Moi also wished Hon. Odinga success in his bid to become the Chairperson of the AU Commission," Kanu's post reads.
On Monday, Odinga participated in the International Development Association (IDA21) Summit, a two-day event that brought together African Heads of State and Government from more than 20 countries across the continent. This summit served as a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and strategic planning, offering Odinga an opportunity to garner support for his audacious goal of leading the African Union Commission.
