Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has responded to Minority Leader Junet Mohamed's dismissal of his recent public declaration as the country's new opposition leader.
In a press conference held in Mombasa on Sunday, Musyoka responded to Junet's criticism, accusing him of overstepping his authority and attempting to control public opinion without proper justification. Despite dismissing Junet's remarks as inconsequential, Musyoka maintains that their relationship remains cordial, emphasizing their shared legislative history and his advisory role to Junet. The conflict arises against the backdrop of recent appointments of ODM members to President Ruto's Cabinet, which has left the Azimio coalition in a state of uncertainty.
Rival factions are now vying for control and influence within the opposition. Musyoka, while acknowledging these developments, expresses his commitment to expanding collaboration within the coalition, which comprises 23 parties. He stresses the importance of maintaining a united front in opposition, warning ODM about the implications of its members joining the government. On the other hand, Junet has defended his position by highlighting the absence of a constitutionally recognized role for an official opposition leader.
Speaking at a separate event, Junet emphasized that the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report has yet to establish this position formally. Junet also indicated his intention to work collaboratively with Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah to potentially formalize the opposition's status within parliamentary procedures. The situation is further complicated by the presence of coalition members in government positions, which raises questions about the opposition's ability to effectively oversee and challenge the ruling administration's agenda.
“There is no place in the constitution where the role of the opposition leader has been highlighted. We as the minority members in parliament, will work with the Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah to establish the position of the official opposition leader,” said Junet.
