Raila Odinga Visits IBM Research Institute in New York

Raila Odinga, a candidate for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, visited the IBM research institute in Armonk, New York on Thursday, September 26.

During his visit, Odinga emphasized the potential of emerging technologies for Africa's development. He expresses optimism about the continent's future, citing innovative advancements, infrastructure projects, and unprecedented investment opportunities as key factors positioning Africa for a remarkable era of growth. This visit to the IBM facility is part of a broader diplomatic initiative by Kenya to secure support for Odinga's candidacy from African heads of state. Accompanying Odinga in New York are several high-ranking Kenyan officials, including President William Ruto, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and other cabinet members.

The delegation is attending the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which provides a strategic platform for Odinga to engage with African leaders and advocate for his AUC chairmanship bid. The elections for the AUC chairmanship are scheduled for February 2025, with Odinga competing against Djibouti's Foreign Affairs Minister Mahmoud Youssouf for the top position. Elkana Odembo, the former Kenyan Ambassador to the US and current leader of Odinga's campaign, emphasizes the comprehensive nature of their outreach efforts, stating that Odinga would explore all avenues in his quest for the AUC chairmanship.

The IBM research institute in Armonk is renowned for its cutting-edge technological advancements, particularly in quantum computing. Recently, IBM and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute unveiled the world's first IBM Quantum System One on a university campus, a development expected to significantly enhance educational and research opportunities in the field of quantum computing across the New York region. Odinga's visit to the IBM facility voices his vision for harnessing advanced technologies to drive Africa's development. He believes that such innovations can play a crucial role in addressing the continent's challenges and unlocking its potential.

The 79th Session of the UNGA, with its membership of 193 countries, serves as a significant forum for global leaders to discuss pressing issues and collaborate on solutions. In addition to his campaign activities, Odinga has been actively engaging with various stakeholders to promote his agenda for the African Union.
