The case of Victoria Mumbua Muloki, a Mombasa-based taxi driver who vanished on September 27, has taken a grim turn with the discovery of a body believed to be hers at the Nairobi City Mortuary.
This comes after an intensive interrogation of the primary suspect, leading detectives to the location where the victim's body was allegedly abandoned. Detectives from the Criminal Intelligence and Research Bureau (CIRB) were instrumental in locating the remains, which were found in a thicket adjacent to a road in Lari, Kiambu County. The body had been taken to the mortuary on September 29, just two days after Mumbua's disappearance. The main suspect, Edwin Ng'etich, who was apprehended on September 29 driving Mumbua's white Nissan Serena at the Pipeline Junction along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway, provided crucial information that led to this discovery.
The investigation has been fraught with confusion and misinformation. Initially, Mumbua's mother, Anne Kanini, received false reports that her daughter had been found injured in Migori County and would be airlifted to Mombasa. This deception culminated in the family transferring Sh 20,000 to an individual claiming to facilitate Mumbua's return, only for the caller to disappear after receiving the funds. Adding to the confusion, police spokesperson Resila Onyango had seemingly confirmed reports of the taxi driver being found. Ng'etich, the primary suspect, has a history of similar offences and has been in police custody since his arrest.
During questioning, he admitted to the crime and guided investigators to the site where he allegedly disposed of Mumbua's body. The suspect's possession of the victim's vehicle further implicates him in the crime. As the investigation progresses, authorities are working to unravel the circumstances surrounding Mumbua's death. Her family, still grappling with their loss, is seeking justice. The case has garnered significant public attention, with many calling for more stringent measures to ensure the safety of taxi drivers and other at-risk individuals. Meanwhile, a post-mortem examination is pending to determine the cause of death, and law enforcement officials are expected to continue their efforts to bring all involved parties to justice.
