Recent weeks have seen Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir embroiled in a controversial investigation stemming from a disturbing incident on September 12.
Allegations have surfaced implicating Nassir and his associate Mohammed Hussein, known as Amadoh, in the abduction and sexual assault of a local blogger. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has already pressed charges against four individuals and indicated that 15 more, including Nassir, his mother, and Amadoh, are under scrutiny. Both Nassir and Amadoh have staunchly denied any involvement. Amadoh recently provided a statement to police following his arrest on Sunday but was subsequently released due to a High Court order prohibiting his arrest and prosecution.
In a show of cooperation, Nassir voluntarily presented himself at the Coast Regional Police headquarters, where he underwent questioning by DCI officers for over an hour. Nassir addressed the media following the interview, emphasizing his willingness to assist the investigation fully. He expresses his condemnation of the incident and stresses that it was unrelated to him personally. The governor has also offered to bring his elderly mother to provide a statement if required by the authorities. The incident in question allegedly involved the abduction of a blogger from his residence in Bamburi Mwisho during the early hours of September 12.
Reports suggest the victim was taken to a remote area in Miritini, where he was sexually assaulted before being abandoned in Mwakirunge. The blogger claims he was deceived into believing he would be apologizing to Nassir for insulting comments made about the governor and his mother in a social media video. This case has drawn condemnation from human rights activists. A graphic video depicting the assault on the blogger has circulated widely, intensifying calls for justice. Law Society of Kenya president Faith Odhiambo denounces the incident as a severe violation of constitutional rights, including personal security, freedom of expression, and human dignity.
The president calls for comprehensive protection of the victim and emphasizes the importance of maintaining judicial independence throughout the proceedings. As the investigation continues, the DCI has indicated that more individuals may be questioned. Governor Nassir has reiterated his commitment to transparency and justice, urging full cooperation with the DCI's efforts while also calling upon anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist the authorities in their pursuit of justice for the victim.
