The Kenyan government strengthened its position on sustainable construction during the Big5 Construct Kenya exhibition in Nairobi this week.
Public Works Principal Secretary Joel Arumonyang articulates the administration's dedication to advancing eco-friendly building practices and affordable housing solutions. In his address, Arumonyang emphasizes the vital function of regulatory bodies, particularly the National Construction Authority, in modernizing construction standards. The focus lies heavily on incorporating sustainability metrics and energy efficiency requirements into building codes, with strict enforcement through green housing certifications.
This regulatory framework supports the government's ambitious housing program, which seeks to develop 200,000 residential units annually to address the current shortfall of 250,000 units. Arumonyang specifically calls for private sector engagement to help bridge this substantial gap while promoting the 'Buy Kenya, Build Kenya' campaign to strengthen domestic industry. The exhibition emerges as a significant platform for industry advancement, attracting more than 8,500 professionals and featuring over 150 exhibitors from both local and international markets. Notable participants include prominent brands such as Stanley Black & Decker, Honda Power, and Liebherr.
The presence of national pavilions from Germany, China, and the UAE showcased cutting-edge developments in construction technology and smart building systems thus highlighting Kenya's growing significance in the global construction landscape. Environmental concerns took centre stage at the event, addressing the construction sector's position as the leading source of greenhouse gas emissions, responsible for 37 per cent of global output. The proposed Climate Change Green and Resilient Buildings Regulations 2023 represents a decisive response to these challenges.
Under these regulations, a specialized green resilient building unit will be established within the State Department for Public Works to oversee certification processes, maintain records, and accredit professionals in the green building sector. The government's comprehensive strategy encompasses both environmental protection and practical implementation of sustainable construction methods. Arumonyang stresses the importance of collaborative partnerships, noting that developers, contractors, and financial institutions must work in concert to realize the vision of affordable, sustainable housing.
This multi-stakeholder approach reflects Kenya's commitment to creating a more resilient built environment while addressing urgent housing needs.
