Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has begun to settle into his new role, weeks after his predecessor Rigathi Gachagua was removed from office.
On Tuesday, November 12th, Kindiki chaired his first Cabinet meeting at the official Deputy President's residence in Karen, Nairobi. The meeting was attended by several Cabinet Secretaries who are members of the Cabinet Committee on Governance, Social Sector, and Public Administration, including the Treasury CS, Education CS, Water CS, and others. In a post on his official X account, Kindiki announces the productive gathering, which focused on enhancing governance for a more inclusive and effective public administration and service delivery.
The transition to Kindiki's leadership marks a new chapter for the Deputy President's office, as he brings his own vision and approach to the role. Kindiki was sworn in as Deputy President on November 1st, following the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua. The National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula announced Gachagua's removal after 282 Members of Parliament voted in favor of the impeachment motion. Gachagua faced several charges, including gross misconduct, a gross violation of the Constitution, and undermining the President.
Upon assuming office, Kindiki moved into the Karen residence, which serves as the official home for the Deputy President. His predecessor, Gachagua, had previously spent Sh660 million on renovations, arguing that the residence needed to reflect the dignity of Kenyan leadership. On Sunday, the Deputy President commended the current government for significant achievements in reducing the cost of living in Kenya since taking office in 2022. He stated that the country's inflation rate has fallen to 2.7%, the lowest in 17 years, which he attributed to effective economic policies and the power of prayer.
Kindiki highlighted the reduction in prices of essential goods, such as the price of a 2kg packet of maize flour dropping from Sh 250 to Sh 100, easing the financial burden on households nationwide. He praised the government's commitment to economic stability and its implementation of various projects to benefit all communities. The Deputy President expressed optimism that the ongoing reforms will transform Kenya substantially by the next general election in 2027, and he encouraged citizens to support the government's vision.
