Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano led the welcoming ceremony at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), where the aircraft was greeted with the time-honoured tradition of a water salute. The historic flight, carrying 377 passengers and crew members, represents a milestone in Kenya's efforts to strengthen its international aviation networks. During the ceremony, CS Miano expressed her enthusiasm about this momentous occasion, emphasizing its potential impact on the nation's growth trajectory. The establishment of this direct route is anticipated to substantially enhance accessibility for Southeast Asian travellers, potentially leading to a surge in tourism numbers.

This strategic development comes at an opportune time as Kenya's tourism sector continues its post-pandemic recovery. This new route represents a milestone in bilateral relations, particularly as Kenya and Malaysia approach their 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties next year. The partnership, which has already flourished across multiple sectors including trade, investment, education, and cultural exchanges, is expected to reach new heights with this enhanced connectivity. Nairobi, Kenya's capital, stands unique among world capitals as the only one featuring a national park within its boundaries. The city serves as an ideal gateway to Kenya's renowned wildlife experiences, including the opportunity to observe the critically endangered Northern White Rhino and witness the spectacular Great Migration in Masai Mara.

Beyond its natural attractions, Nairobi boasts a dynamic urban culture, characterized by vibrant nightlife and diverse culinary offerings. AirAsia X's venture into Africa marks a significant expansion of its global network, with the airline introducing four weekly flights to Nairobi. This service will provide an annual capacity of over 156,000 seats, with competitive fares starting at RM699 or USD199 for one-way travel.
