COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli has proposed the potential elimination of presidential term limit to mitigate persistent political campaigning.
Atwoli argues that the current constitutional restriction perpetuates a cycle of continuous political maneuvering with potential presidential candidates strategically positioning themselves almost immediately after each electoral cycle. Articulating his perspective, Atwoli contends that term limits are fundamentally problematic, creating an environment where political aspirants are perpetually focused on future electoral opportunities rather than substantive national development. He lauds countries without term restrictions as experiencing greater political stability and leadership continuity.
Specifically referencing Uganda, Atwoli questions whether such nations encounter the same political disruptions prevalent in Kenya. The trade unionist further expands his critique by pointing out the apparent double standard in international governance perspectives. He observes that European monarchies, which operate under different constitutional frameworks, do not subject themselves to the same frequent electoral transitions demanded of African nations.
Coinciding with his recent calls for a comprehensive constitutional review, Atwoli emphasizes the challenges facing President William Ruto. He argues that the current constitutional framework enables legal interventions that can effectively paralyze national development projects, even when these initiatives are demonstrably beneficial to the broader public interest. economic advancement. Atwoli also believes Ruto has strategically consolidated support across critical regions, including Western Kenya and Nyanza, by securing endorsements from key political figures such as Raila Odinga, Musalia Mudavadi, Moses Wetangula, and Wycliffe Oparanya.
Atwoli highlights Ruto's 2022 victory against the Azimio Coalition, emphasizing the president's political acumen and ability to mobilize support. He cautions politicians against underestimating Ruto and notes the ineffectiveness of Uhuru Kenyatta's previous endorsement strategy. Atwoli further asserts that the ongoing opposition led by Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa can't be as strong as Raila. He also advises Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah to engage with regional leaders and secure resources if contemplating a presidential bid.

How old is Atwoli?
A man who is 100 years has no stake in the future.
RUTO MUST GO!
Talk about a seasoned political whore.
Atwoli is just looking after his own wealth and trying to get us to crown a King in Kenya!!
We’ve made a mistake of not electing those who fought for the “second revolution”, in the 1990s, into the presidency!
We continue to be ruled by remnants of Moi regime who don’t know crap about democracy!!
Atwoli, what is problematic is the mindset of "immediately after election thinking of the next election" The elected should be thinking about fulfilling the promises they made during campaign.
If your party is the best,in terms of productivity, it will keep on ruling till it becomes unproductive. So consider that as- time limit less.
The reasons we have time limits are still very relevant. To avoid de facto dictatorship, like in Uganda.More importantly, Limits reduce corruption and open our government to new people with new ideas to solve our country's problems.
Iam pretty sure Atwoli's sentiments are shared only by the' elite of the society' who benefit from corruption. If Iam wrong, lets have a referendum on this issue.
