President William Ruto of Kenya has been elected as the new Chairperson of the East Africa Community (EAC), succeeding South Sudan's President Salva Kiir.
This transition occurred during the 24th EAC Heads of State Summit held in Arusha, Tanzania, on November 30, which was convened from November 29 to December 1. Ruto's ascension to this influential position enhances his profile within East Africa, complementing his existing role as the African Union (AU) Champion for Institutional Reform. In his inaugural address, he praised President Kiir for his effective stewardship over the past year, recognizing the strides made in advancing regional integration and achieving notable developmental objectives.
In outlining his vision for the EAC, President Ruto has committed to advancing the community's mission and strategic goals. He expresses Kenya's readiness to lead the regional integration agenda and advocates for the establishment of a political confederation in East Africa. His vision includes the promotion of prosperity, stability, security, and political unity, supported by economic integration, policy harmonization, and a commitment to celebrating cultural diversity. Furthermore, Ruto acknowledges the progress made by EAC member states in enhancing bilateral relations but emphasizes the need for collaborative efforts to address persistent challenges.
His remarks include a commitment to improving regional livelihoods, promoting interregional trade, and attracting investment to strengthen the economies within the EAC framework. Meanwhile, Raila Odinga's bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship has gained momentum following the withdrawal of Seychelles’ former Vice President Vincent Meriton. Meriton announced his exit from the race in July, citing health concerns that would hinder his ability to manage the pressures of the position.
Expressing his support for Odinga, Meriton highlights the need for a new leadership approach at the AUC, emphasizing that the selection should focus on candidates capable of advancing Africa’s interests on the global stage. He praised Odinga’s extensive experience, passion, and commitment to Pan-Africanism, urging member states and regional communities to unite behind him for the continent’s welfare.
A thief.
RUTO MUST GO!
