Two men tragically lost their lives, while two others sustained critical injuries following the collapse of a perimeter wall in Runda, Nairobi, amid heavy rainfall on December 17.
A private homeowner engaged the four men to paint and decorate the wall when inclement weather forced them to seek refuge in a nearby kiosk. During this time, the wall collapsed, trapping the workers under the rubble. Emergency services promptly transported the injured individuals to a hospital in Kiambu; however, two men were pronounced dead upon arrival. Investigating authorities, including officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Gigiri, have initiated an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Nairobi police chief Adamson Bungei has confirmed that multiple witness statements have been recorded and that the bodies of the deceased have been sent to County Referral Hospital Kiambu for postmortem examinations. Central to the investigation is whether the wall's construction complied with established safety standards. As of now, the property owner remains untraceable, raising concerns about potential negligence regarding the wall's structural integrity.
In other news, a tragic accident occurred on Monday at SGR Section 5 near Duka Moja on the Narok-Mai Mahiu Road in Narok County. Multiple vehicles collided, resulting in fears of several fatalities. The incident, which involved a Prado, a bus, a shuttle, and a trailer, was reportedly caused by the trailer driver losing control while descending the Nairagie-Enkare escarpment, leading to a crash with the other vehicles.
Eyewitness footage captures the chaotic aftermath of the collision, with debris scattered across the roadway and traffic police already deployed to manage the site. At this moment, the exact number of casualties remains unknown. The Kenya Red Cross has confirmed on X that the accident involved six vehicles and that rescue personnel have arrived at the location. The organization reports that the injured victims were transported to Narok County Referral Hospital for medical treatment.
As the holiday season approaches and travel increases significantly, authorities urge travellers to adhere strictly to traffic regulations to mitigate the risk of accidents, particularly in known hazard zones.
