Dr. Peter Mbae, who was Head of Government Delivery Services (GDS), has tendered his resignation.
He cites persistent issues related to his working conditions that he previously addressed with Chief of Staff Felix Koskei. In his resignation letter, dated January 9, Mbae expresses his frustration regarding the obstacles he faced, which he believed impeded his ability to fulfil his responsibilities effectively. Mbae's departure occurs less than a year after his appointment to the GDS.
He articulates his deep commitment to his role but indicates that unresolved matters have rendered his position untenable. He states his intention to formally disengage from the role to explore other professional opportunities, emphasizing his accountability to the Kenyan populace. In a recent interview, Mbae confirmed his exit, mentioning his plans to return to prior professional pursuits.
With an extensive background in public service, he previously served as the Head of Ministerial Programmes in the Ministry of Public Service, Performance, and Delivery Management, as well as the Secretary of Investments Promotion in the Ministry of Investments, Trade, and Industry (MITI). Additionally, he held the position of Head of the Ministerial Delivery Unit.
His resignation has prompted discussions surrounding potential discontent within the government, particularly in light of recent comments made by Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, who publicly criticized the administration over a series of abductions, including that of his own son, who was later released. The GDS, located within the State Department for Performance and Delivery Management, plays a pivotal role in coordinating flagship government programs.
Its core responsibilities include monitoring, evaluating, and reporting on the execution of key development priorities, along with tracking the status of national government initiatives, projects, and presidential directives. Moreover, the GDS engages in problem-solving and delivers practical interventions for challenges that arise concerning government priorities.
