The Sudanese government has condemned Kenya for permitting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to conduct activities at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), labelling the move as a hostile act.
In a statement issued by Sudan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government claims that Kenya's decision infringes upon international principles and its commitment to neutrality in Sudan’s internal conflicts. Sudan’s authorities express deep disappointment, asserting that hosting the RSF, which they categorize as a "terrorist militia," undermines the principles of good neighbourliness and violates international law, the United Nations Charter, the African Union's Constitutive Act, and the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
They further argue that Kenya's actions suggest an endorsement of the alleged crimes committed by the RSF, thereby straining diplomatic relations between the two countries. In response, Kenya's Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary, Korir Sing’oei, has dismissed Sudan's allegations, emphasizing that Kenya is committed to facilitating a negotiated settlement to the ongoing conflict in Sudan. Sing’oei clarifies that while Kenya is enabling RSF political activities, it does not equate to support for the group’s demands; rather, it indicates a willingness to foster dialogue among all parties involved in the conflict.
Despite these reassurances, the Sudanese Foreign Ministry maintains that the RSF's presence in Nairobi contradicts diplomatic commitments and heightens tensions in the region. They urge the international community to condemn what they describe as a provocative action by Kenya. The RSF’s conference in Nairobi commenced on Tuesday and is scheduled to continue through Wednesday, with the goal of establishing a "Government of Peace and Unity."
This initiative is reportedly gaining broad popular support and significant international participation, aiming to formalize a charter for the new government. However, Sudanese officials contest that this political effort will not alter the on-ground realities, as the Sudanese Armed Forces and their allies are actively working to reclaim territory from the RSF. The ongoing conflict in Sudan has precipitated a severe humanitarian crisis, resulting in tens of thousands of casualties and millions displaced.
