Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has rejected proposals from some Kenya Kwanza legislators to create the position of Prime Minister for opposition leader Raila Odinga.
Speaking on KTN News on Wednesday, Kalonzo questioned the rationale and potential implications of such a move for Odinga, emphasizing the unconstitutional nature of the suggestion. Kalonzo argues that accepting the position would undermine Odinga’s claim, supported by his coalition, that he won the last election. He further warns that such an action could damage Odinga's political standing.
"According to him, and according to us in the ticket with Martha Karua they won the elections, and now you want him to become Prime Minister? What will he be saying to the country?" Kalonzo remarks.
Musyoka expresses his hope that Odinga would not join the Kenya Kwanza government. He highlights Odinga’s role as a principal in consultations with President William Ruto under the National Dialogue Committee (Nadco), indicating that aligning with Kenya Kwanza would forfeit this position. The proposal for Odinga to take on the role of Prime Minister follows recent remarks by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, who advocated for the creation of the position as outlined in the Nadco report.
Cherargei argues that Odinga's experience and leadership should not be overlooked, calling it a way to appreciate and reward Odinga for his contributions to democracy and the rule of law in Kenya. The Nadco report, co-chaired by Musyoka and Kimani Ichung'wah from the Kenya Kwanza Coalition, emerged after extensive deliberations and public submissions. Among its key recommendations was the establishment of the Office of the Leader of the Official Opposition, along with at least two deputies.
Meanwhile, Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua met with Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa in Nairobi on Wednesday, fueling speculation about a potential political alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections. This marks the first formal discussion between the three leaders as they explore strategies to strengthen their political collaboration and potentially form a new coalition. The meeting occurs amid increasing signs of a shifting political landscape, evidenced by Gachagua's recent activities.
On January 28, Gachagua attended the launch of DAP-K’s new Chui Headquarters in Nairobi. During the event, Gachagua criticized President William Ruto, accusing him of reneging on prior political agreements. Specifically, Gachagua claimed Ruto abandoned commitments such as the 47 county investment charters and the clearing of pending bills. He also challenged Ruto’s moral authority to address corruption allegations leveled against him.
These developments follow Gachagua’s postponement of his new party's launch to May. While details of the Wednesday meeting remain undisclosed, speculation suggests discussions centered on a joint strategy for the upcoming 2027 elections. Simultaneously, Gachagua has intensified efforts to consolidate his political base within the Mount Kenya region. This includes aligning himself with former Justice Minister Martha Karua, leader of the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), formerly NARC-Kenya.
