A significant restructuring of parliamentary committees in Kenya has resulted in the ousting of several key chairpersons, including Ndindi Nyoro, the Kiharu Member of Parliament who previously headed the influential National Assembly Committee on Budget and Appropriations.
The move signals a potential shift in political dynamics within the ruling coalition. The removal of Nyoro follows a motion led by South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro, who cited overwhelming interest from over 90 MPs seeking positions on the Budget and Appropriations Committee. Osoro emphasized the need for balanced regional representation, gender parity, and diverse political affiliations within the committee's composition.
Nyoro will remain a member of the committee until a new chairperson is elected within the next seven days. The committee shakeup extends beyond Nyoro, impacting other prominent lawmakers considered allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba, formerly chairing the Constitutional Oversight and Implementation Committee, has been reassigned to the Members Services Committee.
Other Gachagua loyalists affected include Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia, Embakasi North MP James Gakuya, and Kajiado North MP Onesmus Ngogoyo, who have all lost their leadership roles. These changes echo a recent similar restructuring in the Senate, where Gachagua allies such as Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang'wa and Nyandarua Senator John Methu were removed from their committee positions.
These senators attributed their removal to their association with the former Deputy President. The timing of these events has fueled speculation about the underlying power dynamics within the ruling coalition. Some observers suggest the changes are an attempt to consolidate control and reward loyalty, while others view them as necessary for ensuring inclusivity and effective governance.
