An unauthorized police patrol base has been discovered in Cherus Centre, Kesses Sub-County, Uasin Gishu County, prompting an investigation by the National Police Service (NPS).
The discovery was made by local officials on March 8, 2025. The incident was formally recorded under OB04/08/03/2025 by officers from Kamuyu Police Post, operating under Kondoo Police Station. The facility, deceptively painted in official police colours, had been operating from a building within Cherus Centre.
The presence of the base had led residents to believe it was a legitimate effort to enhance local security. The suspect, a resident of Asis village in Ndugulu Location, Kesses Sub-County, established the base without the knowledge or authorization of senior police officers, raising concerns about potential motives and the duration of its operation.
"We were surprised to learn that the police patrol base was not official. Many of us thought it was a genuine initiative to improve security in the area," one resident states.
Authorities are now focused on determining the suspect's motives and how long the facility operated. Investigators are also looking into whether any members of the police service were complicit in the unauthorized operation. Local residents will be questioned to ascertain if they had been detained at the facility.
This incident highlights the strict protocols required for establishing official police facilities, which include the provision of an armory, cells, offices, and functional sanitation, none of which were verified at the unauthorized base. The National Police Service has assured the public that appropriate measures will be taken to address the situation and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
