Former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has publicly admitted to orchestrating the impeachment of his successor, Governor Kawira Mwangaza.
In a statement made Thursday evening, Murungi claimed to have collaborated with elected officials, Njuri Ncheke elders, and clergy members to initiate the ouster. Murungi stated his initial support for Mwangaza shifted due to her alleged focus on political attacks rather than governance. He accuses Mwangaza of failing to deliver on promises to improve the lives of Meru residents and fostering division amongst key stakeholders, including Members of Parliament and Members of the County Assembly.
"I had accepted defeat and was ready to give space to Mwangaza to work for the people of Meru. I went to explore the world and learnt so much about happiness. But back in Meru Mwangaza continued with her campaign of mudslinging and name calling. Instead of working, she went around politicking. Her promise to uplift the lives of the people did not materialise," he said.
Murungi criticizes Mwangaza's leadership style, describing her as a "lone ranger" who neglected collaboration and unity. According to Murungi, the decision to pursue impeachment was also motivated by perceived developmental failures, including the abandonment of promised programs like the school milk initiative.
"She was elected with the promise to advance the interest of the Meru people but it turned out to be mere rhetoric. She had promised to take care of children but scrapped the school milk programme," Mr Murungi said.
While acknowledging the UDA party's influence in his own defeat to Mwangaza, Murungi denies targeting Mwangaza due to her gender, stating that his actions were the result of poor leadership. He defends his record on women's empowerment during his time as governor.
