The Nakuru County Assembly is under increasing pressure to investigate the prolonged absence of Governor Susan Kihika, following a petition signed by over 2,000 county residents delivered Thursday.
The petition alleges a leadership vacuum and demands a comprehensive inquiry into the reasons behind Kihika's absence from her official duties. Residents are requesting a response within two weeks. The call for an investigation comes amid reports of internal disputes between the County Secretary and Deputy Governor David Kones, further destabilizing the county's political environment.
“The governor should choose between running her law firm in Texas, the United States and governing this city. The time for politicking will come but as for now, we demand accountability and transparency,” said a resident.
Residents are also seeking an audit of all foreign travel undertaken by county officials, reflecting broader concerns about the potential mismanagement of public funds. Governor Kihika stated in January that she was on maternity leave and had delegated authority to Deputy Governor Kones.
“Following numerous calls that I have received regarding my absence, as the elected Governor of Nakuru County, I want to first of all assure the people of Nakuru that I am well and currently on maternity leave,” Kihika clarified.
However, this delegation has apparently failed to quell public concerns regarding the effectiveness of county leadership during her absence. Adding to the demands for accountability, residents are urging the county assembly to provide an update on the investigation into the disappearance of local fisherman Brian Odhiambo, who was reported missing on January 18th.
