Police in Kirinyaga County are investigating the death of a young woman whose body was discovered in a septic tank in Ngurubani town last Saturday.
A suspect, identified as the son of a prominent local businessman, has been apprehended and is currently in custody at Wang'uru Police Station. The arrest occurred on Friday afternoon in the Mwariko area of Mwea Constituency, following a tip-off that led authorities to the suspect's hideout. Mwea East Sub-County Police Commander Mohammed Jarso confirmed that the suspect, a university dropout, will face murder charges upon completion of the ongoing investigation.
"This is a very serious crime and the main suspect will be charged with murder," Mr Jarso said.
The victim's body was discovered by a hotel worker cleaning a toilet at a local establishment. Preliminary investigations suggest the woman was strangled and her body concealed in the septic tank in an apparent attempt to cover up the crime. Detectives believe the suspect and victim met at a local bar prior to the incident. Evidence indicates a violent altercation occurred at the suspect’s residence, resulting in the woman's death.
Authorities allege the suspect then attempted to dispose of the body before fleeing the scene. The victim's identity has not yet been confirmed. The suspect's father was summoned to Wang'uru Police Station for questioning following the discovery of the body. After providing a statement and undergoing several hours of interrogation, the businessman was released. Additionally, police interviewed the businessman's wife and three of his employees; all have since been released.
Detectives are now focused on determining the motive behind the crime and gathering information about the victim, including her place of residence.
