Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is actively engaging with Kenyan diaspora communities
This move has raised eyebrows in political circles and fueled speculation of a potential power struggle with President William Ruto as the 2027 general elections approach. This comes as Gachagua aims to solidify his political base, particularly within the Mt. Kenya region, while simultaneously addressing the concerns of Kenyans living abroad. Gachagua's recent engagements highlight the substantial economic influence of the diaspora, whose remittances reached a record Sh640.75 billion last year.
He has publicly voiced concerns regarding the government's policies towards the diaspora, specifically criticizing the taxation of remittances. Gachagua contends that these taxes place an undue financial burden on Kenyans who are already providing significant support to their families at home. During a recent meeting at his residence, Gachagua reportedly pledged to diaspora representatives that he would champion their interests and advocate for policies that encourage investment in Kenya.
“I thanked them for their unwavering patriotism and continued financial support to their loved ones, many of whom are struggling under economic pressure caused by poor leadership and misguided policies,” Gachagua stated.
These activities coincide with President Ruto's efforts to bolster support within the Mt. Kenya region. Ruto recently held a meeting with Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries from the area, prompting conjecture that he is attempting to counterbalance Gachagua's growing influence. The absence of key political figures such as Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi and Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga from President Ruto's meeting has further intensified speculation about a possible rift within the ruling administration.
Political analysts suggest that Gachagua's diaspora outreach and his broader political manoeuvring indicate an ambition to assume a more prominent role in Kenya's political future. Plans for the launch of his own political party in May are widely interpreted as a strategic move to build a strong political platform in advance of the 2027 elections.
Meanwhile, Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba
has urged Gachagua to broaden his leadership beyond Mount Kenya and champion the interests of all Kenyans. While acknowledging Gachagua's strong regional support, she believes he must now focus on national issues such as taxation, labour policies, and the protection of vulnerable communities.
