Muthwani MCA Dominic Maitha
A search is underway for Dominic Maitha, the Member of the County Assembly (MCA) for Muthwani Ward, who has been missing since Monday, March 24.
Family, colleagues, and law enforcement are increasingly concerned about his welfare. Maitha was last seen attending a session at the Machakos County Assembly. His disappearance was reported to the Machakos police station on March 25, under Occurrence Book number 49/25/3/25.
According to his wife, Juliet Ngare, Maitha left their residence on Monday with plans to visit their rural home in Kaloleni before proceeding to the assembly.
Ngare last spoke with her husband around 10:30 p.m. on Monday when he indicated he would be staying in Kaloleni. However, subsequent attempts to reach him the following morning were unsuccessful, with all three of his mobile phones switched off. Ngare says that it is unusual for her husband to be unreachable for such a prolonged period. Family members in Kaloleni confirmed that Maitha did not arrive there as planned.
Colleagues also reported failed attempts to contact him on Tuesday morning, which heightened concerns. Maitha's father, John Maitha, says that his son had visited him on Monday before work and promised to return home later that evening. He has appealed to the public for any information that could lead to his son’s safe return.
The disappearance comes days after Maitha renewed his vow to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Wavinya Ndeti, accusing her administration of nepotism, illegal hiring practices, and corruption. Maitha made the announcement at a bursary distribution event held at the Mlolongo Chiefs’ ground last week, stating that he intends to sponsor the impeachment motion in the coming week.
Maitha, alongside MCAs Daniel Ndwiki and Francis Kavyu, criticized Governor Ndeti’s handling of the county budget, alleging that her decisions have inflated recurrent expenditures to 60% of the total budget, significantly exceeding the legally mandated 35%. The MCAs contended that this mismanagement is diverting critical funds away from essential services.
The MCAs alleged that Ndeti has ignored the county assembly’s advice regarding the hiring of unnecessary staff, further straining the county's financial resources.
He also highlighted concerns over the Machakos Youth Service (MYS), which was initially allocated a budget of Sh.800 million, claiming the program is operating without proper legal oversight. Maitha also accused Governor Ndeti of attempting to destabilize the County Assembly by seeking to remove Speaker Ann Kiusya from her position. He cautioned that such actions could trigger unforeseen consequences.
