Four individuals were sentenced to a combined 115 years in prison Thursday in Kisumu County, following convictions in separate murder cases.
Justice Shariff Mwanaisha delivered the sentences, emphasizing the severity and premeditated nature of the crimes. The rulings underscore a firm judicial response to rising violence in the region, aiming to deter potential offenders and provide justice for victims and their families. Basil Omondi Otieno, known as "Aboi," received a 30-year sentence for the murder of Ismael Salle Asman in Kombedu village. Evidence presented in court showed that Otieno stabbed Asman multiple times in the chest during an altercation.
Asman died from internal bleeding caused by the stab wounds. Otieno fled the scene and evaded arrest for a year. Justice Shariff condemned the brutality of the act during sentencing. Ouma Alfayo Marenya also received a 30-year sentence for fatally stabbing Vincent Thomas Otieno, known locally as "Chief." The incident occurred outside a butcher's shop in Kisumu County. The court heard that an argument escalated, resulting in the victim's death from abdominal wounds.
Justice Shariff cited the reckless nature of the crime in her judgment.
Richard Akombo Gori, alias "Bahati," was sentenced to 35 years for the premeditated killing of Kevin Ohiambo Odinga. Gori, along with accomplices who remain at large, abducted Odinga from his home. Odinga’s body was later discovered partially burned. The judge underscored the calculated and egregious nature of the crime in delivering the sentence.
In the final case, Robert Kipyegon Korir and Geoffrey Kipyegon Mutai each received 20-year sentences for the murder of Dennis Kiplangat Rono in Kadinda village. Court documents revealed that the pair attacked Rono following a dispute over Sh 800, inflicting severe head injuries that proved fatal.
