Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has temporarily assumed oversight of the Public Service Ministry, following the exit of former Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi.
The transition comes as President William Ruto nominated Geoffrey Ruku, the Member of Parliament for Mbeere North, to succeed Muturi. Ruku, a member of the Democratic Party and a key ally of the President, is awaiting parliamentary approval for his formal appointment. Mudavadi acknowledges Muturi's contributions to enhancing public service delivery and operational efficiency during his time in office.
The Prime Cabinet Secretary assures the public that his office would ensure the smooth functioning of the Ministry until Ruku's confirmation. The change in leadership is part of President Ruto's broader strategy to optimize government efficiency and accountability through strategic alignment of leadership roles. Mudavadi emphasizes the administration's commitment to uninterrupted government operations during the transition.
President Ruto has defended his recent decision to remove Justin Muturi from his position, citing performance concerns stemming from Muturi's earlier tenure as Attorney General. Speaking at a media roundtable held at Sagana State Lodge on Monday, Ruto stated that Muturi himself had initially expressed doubts about his capacity to effectively fulfill the responsibilities of Attorney General, given his extended absence from legal practice following his roles as magistrate, Member of Parliament, and Speaker.
Ruto acknowledges his role in persuading Muturi to accept the initial appointment, but notes that his concerns proved to be well-founded. He alludes to further complications, stating, "In between he went on strike coming for Cabinet meetings, you are a minister, but you are on strike, what was I supposed to do?"
Despite these challenges, Ruto emphasizes his belief in offering individuals opportunities for redemption, stating that he granted Muturi a second chance by appointing him as Cabinet Secretary.
"I gave my good friend Muturi a second chance, but in the process, he dismissed himself. What do you expect me to do? I give someone a second chance and he starts doing what he wants to do."
