Kalonzo Musyoka Nominated as Wiper Flagbearer for 2027 Presidential Race

Kalonzo Musyoka has been nominated as the Wiper Democratic Movement's presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
The announcement was made at a national delegates' convention at Nairobi's Uhuru Park, where Kalonzo was endorsed by key opposition figures. His nomination sets the stage for a complex political negotiation ahead of the next election, as rival leaders with regional influence seek to consolidate support under a unified banner.
Kalonzo's endorsement strengthens his position within the opposition, which has struggled to present a cohesive challenge to President William Ruto’s administration. The gathering in Nairobi highlighted the urgency of unity, with opposition leaders from different regions stressing the need for collective action.
Martha Karua, Fred Matiang’i, Eugene Wamalwa and others voiced their support for Musyoka, emphasising the importance of overcoming internal divisions.
In his acceptance speech, Kalonzo criticised the Ruto administration, accusing it of economic mismanagement, undermining public institutions, and fostering a climate of fear.
He promised to prioritise education, public service reform, and infrastructure development, framing his candidacy as a moral challenge to the government. His remarks resonated with many, particularly following last year’s youth protests against government policies, which he referenced in his speech.
Fred Matiang’i, in his address, pledged support for Musyoka while urging his colleagues to accept the inevitable challenges of coalition-building. He cautioned against expecting smooth unity, comparing their efforts to the passions of a political movement rather than the harmony of a choir.
Similarly, Martha Karua reaffirmed her backing, highlighting the opposition’s role in defending constitutionalism and opposing authoritarianism. Eugene Wamalwa also rejected claims of disunity, underscoring the opposition’s determination to challenge President Ruto.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua added his support, using humour and sharp criticism to mock Ruto’s leadership. His endorsement of Kalonzo added further weight to the opposition's unity efforts.
Behind the scenes, political manoeuvres are already underway, with Ruto’s allies reportedly attempting to woo Kalonzo's support base. However, Gachagua has dismissed these overtures, insisting that any negotiations with Kalonzo must go through him.
