Raila Odinga Recovering Well After Illness, Family Confirms

Raila Odinga is recovering in India after falling ill, his brother and Siaya Senator Dr Oburu Oginga has confirmed.

Speaking in Ugunja and during an interview on vernacular radio station Nam Lolwe, Dr Oginga said the former Prime Minister travelled to India recently for medical evaluation but assured that the condition was not serious. He described it as a routine health matter and said Raila is recovering well.

“Raila, just like any other human being, was indisposed a few days ago but at the moment he is doing fine,” Dr Oginga said.

His remarks follow growing speculation about Raila whereabouts and health, and they contrast with earlier statements from family members and aides. Ida Odinga, the ODM leader’s wife, had dismissed reports of illness, saying her husband was simply taking time off.

“As someone who lives with him, I know his health better than anyone,” she said, insisting he was in good health.

Raila's spokesperson, Dennis Onyango, had also rejected claims that the former Prime Minister was unwell. In a previous statement, he attributed the rumours to political mischief and said Raila's absence from public events had been misinterpreted.

Dr Oginga said the family initially chose not to speak publicly because Raila does not hold public office and is not required to disclose personal health information.

“It was not our intention to share his health status, but after a lot was said about this, we saw it wise to clear the air,” he said.
