Raila Jr Installed as Head of Raila's Family

Raila Junior Odinga has formally assumed domestic leadership of the Odinga family during a cultural ceremony held at Opoda Farm in Bondo.

The event, led by Senator Oburu Odinga, marked a generational handover within the family following the recent burial of the former Prime Minister. Oburu, the elder brother of the late patriarch and recognised cultural head of the wider Odinga clan, emphasised that the ceremony was not political but a traditional rite aimed at preserving the family’s heritage and spiritual continuity.

“The seat of power in this home now rests with the new leader Raila Junior, together with his mother,” Oburu said, noting that the mother’s role would remain one of guidance and counsel.

He urged the younger Odinga to uphold his responsibilities with dignity and respect for Luo customs. The ceremony was held on the fourth day after the burial, a day considered significant in Luo tradition as a time for reflection and reaffirmation.

According to Oburu, the family gathered in line with this practice to honour their cultural obligations. Oburu reaffirmed his own position as the overarching cultural custodian of the Odinga clan, a role he said continues a lineage of stewardship established by their father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
