Uhuru Opens Up on Health Struggles During Tribute to Late Banker Frank Ireri

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has offered a rare public reflection on his health while paying tribute to his late friend and former banker Frank Ireri.

Speaking at Ireri’s funeral on 31 October, Kenyatta shared that the two had faced similar health challenges, describing Ireri as a source of strength and encouragement during a difficult period. Without mentioning a specific illness, he said Ireri’s guidance had helped him cope with personal struggles over the past two years.

“For the better part of last year and this year, he was very encouraging about the challenges we were going through,” Kenyatta said. “He gave me hope and strength to continue.”

His remarks have renewed public discussion about his health, which has been the subject of speculation following a period of reduced public activity. Observers have noted his limited political presence and visible physical changes, though his associates in the Jubilee Party have previously dismissed claims of serious illness as unfounded. Kenyatta’s tribute also reflected a tone of acceptance and faith.

“The reason Frank is lying here is because it is his time,” he said. “Those who still have these challenges will continue fighting, but when it is God’s time, we shall join him and be thankful for the life we have lived.”

In recent months, the former president has resumed more public engagements, including presiding over a Jubilee Party National Delegates Conference and attending the inauguration of Nigeria’s National Defence College Course 33 in Abuja on 28 October. These appearances have suggested a return to a more active role both in local politics and international affairs.
