Police Arrest Kenyan Couple for Refusing to Take Daughter to Form One

Police in Kirinyaga County have arrested a man and his wife for allegedly refusing to take their daughter to Form One.
Kanyekiine Location Chief Lawrence Macharia says the girl was supposed to join Form One in January but the couple blocked her despite Kirinyaga Central Constituency paying her fees in full.
The girl from Kianjege Village, Kirinyaga Central was supposed to join the nearby Kirimunge Mixed Day Secondary School.
“Since schools were opened, this girl has been at home. We have arrested both parents and we are going to charge them in court,” says Macharia.
He says that it is against the law to deny a child the right to education.
The two are being detained at Kerugoya Police Station and will be arraigned in court on Monday for denying the girl the right to education.
The government has been pushing for 100 percent transition from primary to secondary school through the introduction of free education but has not been successful.
