Eight People in Court for Failing to Pay Sh4.4 Million Bill after Partying at Luxurious Nairobi Hotel

Eight people were arraigned in court on Tuesday for allegedly failing to pay a bill of more than Sh4 million at a luxurious Nairobi hotel.

Appearing before Milimani Law Courts Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi, the suspects were charged with attempting to defraud the hotel out of Sh4.4 million after enjoying services.

The accused persons are said to have accumulated the huge bill after wining and dining at Clarence House Hotel in the Westlands area for one week.

One of the suspects named Caroline Muthoni is said to have invited the other seven to the hotel to allegedly celebrate her achievement.

She reportedly claimed she had won an international award from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Caroline together with her friends identified as Marylynne Chege, Victor Oduor, Natasha Wanjiru, Jackline Wanjiru, Alvin Onyango, Julius Mwangi, and Grace Wanjiru checked in at the hotel on May 22nd were supposed to leave on May 30th, 2019.

After partying for six days without paying, the hotel management decided to demand money from the group after they became suspicious.

The hotel was forced to detain them before handing them to police after they failed to settle the bill.

Six of the eight suspects, Chege, Oduor, Natasha, Jackline, Onyango, and Grace opted for an out of court settlement with the hotel.

Four of them paid the hotel Sh100,000 each, while the remaining two; Omondi and Onyango, placed their car as security pending payment of their debt.

Caroline Muthoni and Julius Mwangi denied the charges of obtaining credit worth Sh3.8 million and were freed on Sh500,000 cash bail.

The matter will be mentioned in two weeks.
